Korshunov Mining Plant Mines 500-Millionth Tonne of Ore

Miners at Korshunovsky Open Pit of Korshunov Mining Plant (KGOK PAO, part of Mechel Group) mined a 500-millionth tonne of ore since the plant’s founding.

The milestone tonne was loaded at the 3rd ore stockpile by the best excavator team’s shovel runner Alexander Garipov. A celebratory meeting was held after the loading was complete.

The milestone tonne of ore will be processed and supplied to Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, also part of Mechel Group.

The first tonne of ore at Korshunov Open Pit was loaded in December 1964, three months before the plant’s official birthdate. The first hundred million tonnes were marked a decade later, in April 1974. In 2016, Korshunov Open Pit yielded 4.1 million tonnes of ore, with 3.9 million cubic meters of overburden removed for disposal.

“Even now, more than half a century since launch, Korshunov Open Pit remains one of our plant’s chief ore resource, supplying our washing plant with high-quality iron ore,” Korshunov Mining Plant PAO’s Managing Director Boris Sedelnikov noted.
