Urals Stampings Plant mastered production of large-size 60-tonne forgings
Сhebarkul, Russia – July 16, 2019. Urals Stampings Plant (Uralkuz PAO, part of Mechel Group, MOEX: URKZ) produced a large-size forging from a steel ingot weighing more than 60 tonnes. For Russia, this is a unique product. The forging is intended for delivery to the Group’s other facilities enabling them to reduce costs of acquiring accessories for steel production from third parties. The plant’s next plan includes mastering output of a 80-tonne ingot to meet Mechel enterprises’ need for cast rolls.
The 60-tonne billet was cast at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant and then delivered on a special railcar to Urals Stampings Plant’s forge-and-press shop for hot deformation on the pressing machine. Production of ingots of this weight became possible after special technological equipment was installed in the shop. These billets are planned for mass production in order to provide Mechel’s enterprises with cast rolls for their rolling mills, as well as sell them on both the domestic and international markets.
Earlier, Urals Stampings Plant mastered production of forgings from 50-tonne ingots. As a result, Chelybinsk Metallurgical Plant, which receives finished bulk ingots can save significantly on the purchase of such components from third parties. The plant annually requires up to 40 large-scale cast rolls, which are used in hot rolling mills, including the universal rolling mill. In the short term, Urals Stampings Plant’s forged rolls will also be used at Mechel’s other steel plants.
“As we develop this product, we plan to expand our sales geography in the domestic market. We are also actively exploring export opportunities. At the same time, we are preparing to produce forgings from 80-tonne ingots, which will enable us to fully meet the Group's steel division’s needs for cast rolls and avoid purchasing them on the side,” Urals Stampings Plant PAO’s Production Director Sergey Palkin comment
